FunMill  Films  Fest  Competition

Think you've got what it takes to win the FunMill Films Fest Competition?  We'd love to see what you've got!

Each team will receive the same first page of a script and the challenge will be to see how each team chooses to complete the story.  There are no set genres to abide by, and there are very minimal rules - we want to see the best of what you can come up with while having very minimal creative restrictions.  All films are guaranteed to screen at our main event and cash prizes and awards will be distributed at our after party!

Official  Rules

  • Only 24 teams will be accepted into the competition.  Availability is on a first come, first serve basis so make sure to sign up ASAP so you don't miss your chance!  (SOLD OUT as of 1/4/22)
  • Each team will be given the same first page of a script, you MUST use this first page EXACTLY AS IS to begin your film or you will be disqualified with no refund provided.  (Your film will still screen - but you are ineligible for prizes and awards)
  • By "as is" we mean you must follow the first page as written.  If a character is written to say "Hello how are you?" the actor must say the line as such.  Saying "Hello, how are you doing?" is not following the first page correctly.  However, if the actions state "the two characters stare at each other" but no other context is given, there is opportunity to be creative.  The two characters staring at each other can be mad, happy, confused, sad...etc. as long as no other context has been provided.  Same goes for camera motion, music, lighting, etc. - if no instruction has been given, or instruction is vague, creativity can be added to set your film apart.
  • Short films cannot exceed 7 minutes total (including credits).
    • RON GEORGE CLAUS - If your film has sensitive subject matter (nudity, excessive gore, triggering subject matter such as rape, suicide, racism, homophobia, transphobia, fatphobia, illness, etc.) we require you MUST include a 30 second WARNING highlighting the subject matter before your film begins.  This 30 seconds is part of your allotted 7 minutes.  The FunMill Films Festival does not want to ever hinder creative freedoms - if you have a story to tell which requires you to touch on sensitive matters we just ask that you do so tastefully.  Anything handled offensively, that we feel would upset our audience, will not be screened with no refund provided.  Please use your best judgement while considering if you're handling sensitive subject matter properly.
    • DR. SCOTT CLAUS - Your film MUST indicate it has ended.  We know adding credits can be very hard when they are included in your 7 minute time allowance.  However, while credits are not required, we ask that you please have at least a black screen at the end of your film with words such as "The End," "Fin," "To be Continued," etc. or your team name indicating your story has ended.
  • Our kick-off date is April 1st.  You will have from April 1st until April 30th to complete your film.  There are no other rules or stipulations to filming within this time frame other than you must turn in your completed film before time runs out on April 30th in the required format.
  • You may NOT show your film publicly until it screens at the event May 21st.  You may post a 1 minute trailer, release a poster, and any behind the scenes photos - but the completed film must premiere at the event or you will be disqualified without a refund provided.
  • Judging will commence as follows:
    • Each team captain will be given (1) vote at the screening.  You may not vote for yourself, and collectively a team captain winner will be chosen through a majority vote.
    • A panel of judges will be in attendance at the screening and collectively will vote for a judges winner.
    • The audience will also be given a vote.  Slips of paper will be provided before each screening and an Audience Choice winner will be determined based on majority vote.
    • FunMill Films will then choose a 1st place, 2nd place, and 3rd place winner based on the Team Captain vote, the Audience vote and the Judges vote winners.  The award ceremony will follow the last screening of the night.  Votes will be counted directly prior.
    • All other awards will be pre-determined by FunMill Films and distributed at the Award Ceremony following the event.
